How Long Does A Web Site Take To Build?
By Brooke Long

There are many different elements that need to be considered when building your web site. I will list them all for you. When you look at this list you will realize the time that it takes to build a web site.

  1. The Initial Discussion
We talk about many things before we start on your web site:
    The look
    The goal(s)
    The audience
From there we start talking about the specific pages you would like in your site based on the above information. This can take a few days to get everything on order.
  2. The Design - what it looks like
What elements do you want in your web site?
    Hover buttons
    Flash
    Databases
    Graphics (what is the amount?)
    Text
    E-newsletter
This can take a few days.
  3. Initial Design - the creation
This is based on everything that I have already mentioned. With this information I begin the initial look of the site. The site look does not contain any content at all. It might not even contain the flash or hover buttons. It is just a one page shell of your site. The colors, navigation, and basic design are all based on our conversations. Once you see the design, you critique it. The colors, wording for the links, the navigation, etc all need to be looked at. You decide what you like and do not like. From there I perfect it based on your comments.
This can take a few weeks to be looked over and perfected.
  4. Adding Content
Once that initial design is done I start adding all of your content that you provide. Graphics, text and everything else needs to be added. This can take quite a while depending on how fast the content gets to me.
  5. Checking the Site
This entails work from me and work from the client. I make sure that all of the links are working. I run reports on your web site, I check all of the graphics, the layout, the code etc. After that is done the client checks that everything works the way that they wanted it to, the graphics and text are all correct and in the correct place, and more. This can take a few weeks to make sure that everything is correct.
  6. Meta Tags
These are tags that are in the back end of the code that can help with many search engines. The client will write all of the code with direction from me. I will then place all of that code. If the client upgrades then they will not be writing the meta tags - that will be done for them.
This can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
  7. Register with the Search Engines
Once that is all complete the site is registered with the search engines. The registration of 8-10 search engines is included with the site. The upgrade is around 120 search engines.

So you can see that a web site can take anywhere from weeks to months depending on the site size, what upgrades are included and how long the client may take with different stages. It should be known that a web site takes more than a week to do. From start to finish even my smallest web sites have taken at least 2 weeks. It is understandable that clients get really busy and when they have to put something off it is usually their web site. If this is something that you are aware of before you begin building you site, then you have a greater chance of finishing your web site faster. Just talk with your designer to find out if their timeframe meets yours!
